I was a bit apprehensive about the OS, since I have never had a linux machine, but it is super easy to use and very intuitive. Whew.

It took me a while to get used to the keyboard, but I have adapted quickly. I wouldn't use such a small keyboard for work, but for casual web surfing, reading docs, and editing/reviewing docs (my main uses of the machine) it is fine.

I downloaded several free ebooks and am using my Eee as a reader during my commute on the train every day. I had considered buying a dedicated reader, but decided on this instead so I could have a web surfing device in my purse, too.

I've had a laptop for years, and never take it anywhere. For work I insisted that I not have to haul a laptop back and forth every day, because they are such a pain, but this one is so small and light that I take it just about everywhere.

Last night I was waiting for someone, in my car, in a shopping center parking lot, and I took out the Eee and the wireless found several available signals at nearby coffee shops. The closest was about 100 ft away. Pretty good.

The wireless works great and connects fast. I love the fast boot time. I'm not thrilled with the touchpad, but then I've never seen one that I like, so take that for what it's worth.

Amazon told me that it would arrive after Xmas, but it arrived on Dec 4. (I ordered it on Nov 28.)

In short, I love this thing, because I can download forums, xwords, or articles to read on the train, and I don't have to carry around a big ole heavy laptop. Worth every penny.

I bought this after seeing the black version available. It is great that Asus did not bump up the premium price for the black (Apple I hope you are listening). I am very happy with this purchase. I avoided the pearl white because I was afraid of getting it scuffed up being white and all.

This is a very user friendly laptop (Targeted after all for your children and older adults). I was never a huge Linux fan but the version that they installed here is at par with xp, even surpasses it because of the tabbed interface that is similar to Firefox. You do not even need to read the manual or be an expert on Linux to figure the thing out. It is a great starter laptop, and at the same time a great secondary laptop for the road warrior or student.

The EEE PC features are ultra mobile, sleek, and loaded with useful programs. I was going to switch the OS to XP but after playing around with the Linux OS, I was impressed with the features it has. I bought this mainly as a portable internet device and for a bit of word processing. I also note that the unit is very light, about 2 lbs. 3 oz and the boot time is exceedingly fast since it has a solid state drive. I actually rated this 4 1/2 stars. The gripes I have are expected, the keyboard is cramped and takes a bit of getting used to and you have to have an external dvd/cd drive to update to xp. The monitor though at a lower 800 x 600 resolution, is surprisingly bright and crisp. So far the storage is at 4 gig, so you have about 1.5 gig left over. This can be solved by adding a high capacity SD card, right now I believe they have up to 16 gig capacity for sale (I installed 4 gig). Love the fact that wireless G is built in. I haven't used the webcam yet but so far I am very impressed with the total package.

Highly recommended to adults and kids. Great little laptop for all ages. Truly a complete and very Excellent, Exciting, and Extraordinary PC!

Update: Wireless connectivity works great. I was able to use it with great ease at Sky Harbor Airport at Arizona, battery life last about 2 1/2 hours (running media files a lot though) but the small A/C plug comes in handy, it weighs 6 oz. So total carry weight with the unit is 2 lbs. 9 oz. Was able to use web cam, it does a decent job, I don't plan to use it as much so it is not an issue for me. I love the fact that many people commented on how small the laptop is.

Warranty update: You can now upgrade the ram to 1 gig or 2 gig without voiding the warranty. Visit the Asus EEE pc site for more info.

Great review, though I think your point about the keyboard is a bit misstated. It's not impossible to get the feel for it, but being smaller than the standard keyboards we're used to, will take some time to get used to. I agree about the external mouse, then again I hate touch pads to begin with. I ALWAYS carry a mouse, even with my full sized laptop.I would agree with everything said here. Out of curiosity I bought the 2GB model just to give it a whirl I am pleasantly pleased. I added a 2GB SD card for $15 and I am fine. I only intend to use this one when I travel so this will suit me fine. As to the keyboard - yes a drawback - therefore I have resorted to two finger typing on this Eee PC which seems to work much better. all in all I am glad to have the 2GB low price version. If you still have a standard size laptop bag, you can also tote a standard size USB 104 button keyboard. It'll still take up less than half of the space and leave room for your IPOD, digital camera, and toothbrush and still use the other half as a gym bag. I've even seen those roll up anti-spill keyboard that would even take up less space.A very complete review!

I would have to disagree with you though, on the issue of the keyboard and touchpad. I'm a large male I'm getting pretty good at touch-typing on the EEE. Never had a problem with the touchpad. My only issue size-wise is getting the thing to sit on my lap, I have to practically freaking cross my legs and it gets uncomfortable quickly - so for living-room surfing it goes on the arm of the couch. :P"The keyboard is tiny and probably impossible for adults with normal-sized hands to touch-type on. This means that the eeePC is impractical as a portable writing machine."

I worked for Toshiba at the Atlanta COMDEX where the (much smaller) Libretto was introduced. What I observed was this pattern of reactions:

* about 50% of people took to it like a duck to water.
* about 40% of people played around with it, and could be heard musing, "You know, this is a bit small, and I'm not used to right now... But I bet in a few weeks I *could* be... and, man, having a computer this small would be nice..."
* about 10% rejected the machine out of hand. What was curious, though, was the lack of empathy they then showed. "This doesn't work for me. Therefore, it won't work for *anyone*, and Toshiba are a bunch of fools for even *trying* to bring this worthless piece of junk to market..." (Unfortunately, an awful lot of reviewers fell into this group. More's the pity.)

I read your comment above, and I hear that 10% all over again -- only, ironically, with a larger machine and a larger keyboard.

Honestly. As the other comments indicate, keyboards are one of the most wildly variable and idiosyncratic pieces of interface. One's own reactions are *very* unlikely to reflect the reactions of the broad marketplace, for good or for ill.

Having gotten an EEE for my wife, I can think I can safely say: In the same way that Sony's Picturebook series and Toshiba's Libretto command premium prices to this day -- especially for machines of their vintage -- the EEE is going to get a devoted following, one that will result in very little depreciation of the machine over time. People are going to put their money where their mouth is on this one.

Or, while I realize it's anecdotal... If the EEE is impractical as a writing machine, that will come as a surprise to at least one novelist known to be using it enthusiastically (Charles Stross).

The three-star review shouldn't detract from this unit's appeal -- it's a well-made and reasonably-priced unit and does exactly what the vendor claims it will do. This is a rare enough thing these days. But potential buyers need to be aware of the limitations as well of the benefits of this device in order to make a good buying decision.

1. Keyboard. The keyboard is tiny and probably impossible for adults with normal-sized hands to touch-type on. This means that the eeePC is impractical as a portable writing machine. You can use it to jot down notes and such, but you'll be driven bonkers in fairly short order by the cramped layout and small keys. (I hasten to add that Asus was constrained by the size of the device, and did as good a job as could be expected given the form factor).

2. Screen. The screen is small (7 inches) but crisp and very legible. The 800x480 display is good enough for media (this unit makes a great PMP), but less good for writing or taking notes. The LED backlighting is sufficient for all but bright sunlight, and easier on the battery. Asus chose to place the unit's speakers on either side of the screen; I think they would have been better-advised to implement a larger screen instead.

3. Touchpad. The touchpad is small, but works well. But like the keyboard, you'll find it a trial if you have big hands. I recommend carrying an external USB mouse if you plan to do a lot of interacting with the device.

4. Connectivity. The eeePC has a splendid array of connection options: a 10/100 ethernet port, 3 USB2 ports, an SD card slot, and jacks for headphones and a microphone. The WiFi link worked just fine with my WPA-encrypted access point (WEP also works).

5. Software. Asus did a great job in making a very friendly and simple front-end to the default Xandros Linux installation. I'm a long-time Linux user and had anticipated putting my own Linux distribution on the machine, but in the end I found myself liking the Asus install so much that I stuck with it. Asus did a good job in streamlining the interface to work well on the smaller screen. The video player worked for nearly everything I threw at it except for H264-encoded videos (although you can implement this capability with a little tinkering); WMV (non-DRM'd), XviD, Divx, MPG, they all played fine. The audio player is likewise very nice -- it plays MP3, Ogg, FLAC, and un-DRM'd AAC files just fine.

6. Battery. The battery is pretty good for a device of this size; I was able to get a bit over three hours on a full charge, even with fairly heavy use of the video player.

This device only gets three stars instead of four because of the smallish screen and cramped keyboard, but Asus has done a commendable job given the limitations imposed by the small size. And given the capabilities of the device, the price is excellent. If you're comfortable with technology and are willing to spend a bit of time learning to use Linux, you'll probably enjoy this device very much.

asus review

We ended up using 3 of these, thanks to their versatility.
Negatives:
-Initial setup takes up to half an hour, so whatever reason the machine doesn't install all software until you first turn it on. It should come from the factory ready to go.
-The drive is partitioned, C: being the OS and programs, and the D: set aside for "data". Partitioning is not needed with todays OS, so I don't know why they do this. Because programs, documents and music will by default look to install on the C: drive, it will soon fill up. They should have just made it one logical drive.
-There is the usual PC junk like a trial of Norton etc that needs to be banished.
-No standard VESA mount for wall hanging.

Positives-
-Once you are up and running it's a pleasant experience. The Atom processor is not a world beater, but fine for everyday computing needs.
-You can add RAM, but prepare to break out your screwdriver set, and find some hidden tabs at the top. Not for novices.
-The back stand can be removed with a little work, and a modified mount added.
-Portable, simply unplug power and you can move the whole system from place to place as needed.

asus best

As much as I regret it, I have no choice but to return this machine because of its unacceptable online performance. But, let me first provide a brief account of my experience with the EeeBox... Desktop PC. For the sake of complete disclosure, my unit came in 'white'.

Setup:
------
Very easy. The machine comes in a nice little box that hosts its body, the USB keyboard, USB mouse, desktop stand, mounting bracket if it is to be attached to a monitor, Wi-Fi antenna, DVI to VGA adapter, power adapter, manuals, disks, etc. Everything is very tightly and securely packed.

For the physical setup you may need a flat and a Phillips screwdriver if the PC is to be mounted on the back of a monitor. I didn't even notice until the Asus came that certain monitors allow for the installation of a mounting bracket on their back - apparently this is a standard - and the little Asus can be made to sit there - 4 screws to attach the bracket to the monitor and the bracket itself has ONE thumb screw that's sufficient to attach the PC's body to it.

There is only a DVI interface for the video but the supplied DVI-VGA adapter takes care of those monitors that do not support DVI.

The Wi-Fi antenna is easily attached (screwed in) to the body. To my surprise, my white box came with a black antenna but, since I decided to keep it hanging on the back of the monitor, the color mismatch did not bother me.

Once the keyboard and mouse are plugged in and the machine is powered up Windows XP installs itself. It's as easy as providing the user's name.

The manual explains exactly how to set up the Wi-Fi and/or the wired network connection.

The entire setup, physical and software can be completed in less than one hour and it presents no major challenges.

A BIG plus about the setup is that practically there is ZERO bloatware. No AOL, Norton Whatever or software that's set to expire in 30 days appears to be running. In fact, the only thing that you see on the desktop, once the XP installs is the Explorer icon, the trash can and, I believe, the Adobe reader.

Features and performance:
------------------------
On the PC's sides there are 4 USB ports of which 2 are taken by the keyboard and the mouse, an Ethernet port, DVI port and, I believe, a memory stick reader - didn't check exactly which standards are supported.

The optical mouse, while small, appears to be working well. The small keyboard is not 'typist quality' but it's usable. Of course, keyboards and mice are easy to replace.

The machine, as expected, is very quiet and it stays cool while running.

There are no speakers but audio in and out ports are present to allow for headphones/speakers and a microphone or some other audio source.

There is no CD/DVD/BD drive but one could be easily attached via the USB.

As far as running installed sapplications, performance appears to be good. However, any application that involved an on-line component had trouble running. My Wi-Fi router is providing for several computers, a PS3, an online printer and a PSP prior to EeeBox's arrival and performance was always adequate for each unit. The EeeBox, while properly configured - and the Wi-Fi monitor did show near-100% signal strength - was barely communicating with the outside world. It was consistently slow while its other fellow machines on the network were as happy and as fast as ever. It took me a couple of hours and several tries simply to install Google's Chrome browser. The Asus 'upgrades' site seemed to take its time to the extent that, several hours later, a 10MB upgrade received about one third of the data over HTTP and FTP failed altogether. The Adobe Flash player installed itself in about 20 minutes that that's how long it took for a Java update. Amazon's site was slow and so were Yahoo, CNN, Google News. All of the above was within the context of other of our computers whizzing along without any problems whatsoever. I did not test a 'wired' connection.

Conclusion and recommendation:
------------------------------
When ordering this machine I was aware of its lacking a CD/DVD drive and speakers and its CPU, graphics and memory limitations and I accepted those limitations. But, as I stated from the beginning, I am returning it because of its unacceptably poor online performance over Wi-Fi. It is possible that there was something not quite right with this particular box so everyone should be aware that I am evaluating ONE specific machine here, the one that I received.

It is possible that the performance is better over a wired connection but I did not test that.

Had this machine performed better online, it would have been an easy 5-stars for design, ease of setup and functionality.

I purchased this Asus Eee PC as an experiment, replacing my bulky Media Center PC (aka Home Theater PC or HTPC), and I have been extremely satisfied so far. The unit is small (1/10th the footprint of my HTPC), quiet, very responsive, and makes an attractive (if only diminutive) addition to my entertainment center.

I use the unit for web browsing with a wireless keyboard and mouse/remote (with accelerometer), watching online video, Amazon UnBox videos, music playback (multiple formats), video playback (multiple formats), and playing DVDs. So far I have no complaints, from me (the household geek) or my family (internet junkies one-and-all).

Pros: Affordable, small, quick boot, attractive design, high quality graphics, low power consumption, very quiet (nearly silent), and it can be mounted to the back of a display (using the VESA mount).

Cons: None noted

Summary: This very well design unit is not suited for all applications, but when you need a small PC, with diminished demands, this is an excellent solution at a very affordable price. I added a USB DVD/CD RW to my tools, using only when needed, and it works flawlessly. I purchased this product a couple of months ago to use as a wall mounted rss information display driving an old flat panel. It has been rock solid without any problem for the wireless connection or need to reboot.

It is virtually soundless and incredibly small. The only detraction is the price point is a bit high. If the price comes down, I could use more of these for standalone specialized applications.

I bought mine the day they went on sale in Thailand and love it. I use it to display my mp3 collection on WiMP and for playing media files. It can be kept out of sight in the sitting room and brought out to show vacation photos/ videos. I like the: low power draw, portability, quick startup, ease of use (rarely use the keyboard), plenty of usb ports, SD card slot. I haven't noticed a fingerprint problem but then again, I don't eat and compute at the same time. I could do without the glowing, blue base light. If you wait, the price will drop; I paid $580 US after VAT refund in Bangkok. I first saw this product @ CES 2009 in Vegas and I was simply just amazed!!! Let's not mention its easy user friendly interface and does everything in a touch, i especially love playing with the e-Opera and e-Memo the most. I hung this unit at the hallway of the house entry and sometimes i remove it and put at the kitchen counter top when i need to watch cooking channels while i cook. Keyboard and mouse really aren't necessary, but they look really nice. It's ATOM powered machine so is very energy efficient which I'd leave it on all day. The images taken from the 1.3mp web cam are super clear and def. nice when I skype with my friends and sound is very clear too. It has many USB ports but no optical drive, but i suppose i can just buy a Asus external slim ODD to match it. It's quite cheap and pretty design.

Overall, I think Asus is still the leader in innnovation, and this is by far the best Asus purchase i've made, i love it!!! I thought it would cost a vicinity of a grand, but only $599 street price?? unbelivable

    asus eepc

I just received my ASUS eee top. I have read the reviews of the ASUS eee line over the past year with some amusement as most of the reviewers miss the point of a device like the eee line. I have an eee netbook, two eee boxes and now an eee top. If you are judging these device in some kind of CPU horsepower contest than you are missing out. These devices do some things extremely well and with their low power consumption they do it in environmentally friendly ways. I use an eee box as a poor womens server. I connect my external hard drives to it, share them on the network and I have four terabytes of data ready whenever I want it. I have a hardwired gigabit network in my house and wireless N for portable devices. I use another eee box as a media player for an LCD television. Sure they are not stars at H-Def but they are killer at DiVx compressed videos or movies downloaded with BitTorrent. My new eee Top is proudly sitting on my kitchen counter connected over the network to my mp3 library and flawlessly streaming to my stereo wirelessly with an apple airport express. I loaded iTunes onto the eee top and it effortlessly detected the airport express and connected with little intervention. I tested it last night by playing music across the WiFi network to the airport express, while watching a movie with VLC being streamed across the network and surfing the web all at the same time. The CPU utilization never went over 79% That places it in the powerful enough for most uses category. Put that together with the nice looks, the touchpad and the low price and this is one fine mom-puter as this mother testifies. My eee netbook is the 1000HE in blue and gives up to 9.5 hours of use time. I seldom need anything like that much time but it is nice to have a netbook that works that well and not have to worry about the power running out during the day. It has proven to be a life changer for my times on the road.
In short, I now have four ASUS devices and I plan on buying one or two more for specific device applications. I have been able to retire several older power sucking beast and lower my electric bill and these devices are so low power and so quiet I can leave them on all the time and not be concerned. I would recommend that you give the eee top a try if you want to listen to music, watch cooking videos, or surf the web in your kitchen. It works well, looks great and is whisper quiet.

These are not real time 3D game machines, but lets face it not everyone is driven by testosterone and what these

    asus review

I just got this a few days ago (not from Amazon) and am really happy with it. As far as I can tell, it's very similar to the Asus 1000H, but it doesn't have wireless n (just b/g) and it doesn't have bluetooth. For me, that was worth the $50 savings over the 1000H.

    Pros:
Good size. It's really easy to carry around. I hate carrying my full size laptop back and forth to work. This one slips nicely into my bag.

Battery life. I get about 4 hours from the battery. I think I could squeeze more out if I used the power saving option and turned off the wireless when I'm not using it. (new note: with power saving options turned on, I get just over 5.5 hrs from the battery. That also reflects having 2gb of RAM installed. - 10/26/08) Still good enough that I don't bring my power cord with me to work unless I'm going to use it all day. And way better than the other netbooks I looked at.

Ease of upgrade. I'm not very tech savvy. However, it was WAY easy to open up my 1000HA and pop in a 2gb memory stick, and junk the 1gb stick that comes with this. You just need a small Phillips screwdriver. No weird keyboard lifting and no cracking open cases and no voiding of warranties. I almost bought the Acer Aspire One, which I think is better looking, but it's apparently more technically difficult to upgrade. The hard drive looks easy to upgrade, too. FYI, if you DO upgrade the memory yourself, make sure to F2 into the BIOS on startup. No need to change any settings in the BIOS, but the BIOS needs to automatically recognize the 2gb memory (Windows won't recognize it without the BIOS acknowledgment first).

Weight. Light, but still feels substantial, so it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart.

Asus name. I guess Asus isn't a big household name, but at least I've heard about eeePC for a little while. I almost bought the MSI Wind, which looked pretty easy to upgrade, too. But I got scared since I hadn't actually seen an MSI Wind anywhere. If someone wants to send me a free one, I'll evaluate it and re-write this review. =)

    Cons:
The shift key on the right hand side of the keyboard is in an awkward place. I'm hopeful that my brain will eventually learn where it is so I don't hit the arrow keys or the enter key by mistake all the time, but until then, it's kind of annoying. On the plus side, the rest of the keyboard works great, and I can still type comfortably with it.

Glossy cover. It picks up some fingerprints. Boo. I hear the Fine Ebony version picks up even more fingerprints. They include a good neoprene-like sleeve and a fingerprint buffing cloth to keep the netbook fresh and clean, which is kind of neat.

I've been using my Asus 1000HA extensively for a few days now, and thought I'd post a few comments.

First, let me address the two most common "complaints" -- the stiff touchpad keys and the placement of the right shift.

TOUCHPAD KEYS: I also thought the touchpad keys were far too stiff until I realized I was using them wrong. The touchpad keys wrap around the front, and are designed to be "thumbed" at the front, not pushed down from the top. Once I figured out how to use them I found they are not the least bit stiff. It is actually a far better configuration than any other laptop I've used, because when you move your hand down to use the touchpad, your thumb is naturally placed in front of the laptop, and you can flick the touchpad keys from the front instead of trying to crowd all your fingers over the touchpad. With this design, I can now easily cut and paste with one hand, where as with other notebooks I typically have to work the keys with one hand while I use the touchpad with the other. Truly brilliant.

RIGHT SHIFT KEY: As to the shift key, it is technically right where it is supposed to be -- at the far right side of the keyboard. Look down at whatever keyboard you are using and you'll see the right shift key at the far right of the other primary keys (not including the number keys). But to accomodate the up arrow, Asus made the shift key half-sized. So you will find yourself occasionally hitting the up arrow when you meant to shift. I've already programed my brain to reach a little farther when I use the right shift key, so it isn't a problem. Someone else mentioned that she used a program to switch the shift and arrow keys, so that is an option if it turns out to be a problem for you.

MEMORY: I ordered the 2GB memory card along with the notebook, and installed it before I ever turned it on. It was a one minute upgrade. Thank you to all that mentioned going to the bios so that the memory would be recognized. Note that you don't do anything in the bios, just go to there and then save and exit. RAM is the most important component relating to system speed, and the memory was about $30, so I can't imagine that anyone would not want to make that upgrade.

BATTERY LIFE: Battery life was one of the main reasons I bought this notebook, because the two hours I was getting on my other small notebook just wasn't cutting it. After fully charging the battery, I turned on the computer and checked the battery life, which was reported at just three hours! But as Windows got a feel for the battery, that number kept going up until it reached more than five hours. I haven't put a stopwatch to it, but I've actually been doing a little better than that with my daily use thus far. Nice to just sit down and get to work while everyone else is fighting over the electrical outlets at the local Barnes & Noble. UPDATE: I found an aftermarket 12,000 mHa battery on ebay for the 1000HA. With this battery I can go well over eight hours on a single charge! It's quite a bit bigger, so some portability is lost, but between the two batteries I can leave the power brick at home.

USB PORTS: There are two on the right and one on the left. With my other laptop, having all three side by side was a problem because sometimes the item you plug in extends over another port. I had to use a multi-tap just to plug in all my stuff. The one on the left is toward the back, which is cool because I can plug in my Sprint wireless and it is out of the way.

FUNCTION KEYS: I like that there are no separate buttons for mute, wireless, etc. Everything is controlled with the function keys.

SPEAKERS AND TYPING ANGLE: Another brilliant design point. With my other laptop, the speakers are where you wrest your palms while typing, which means I am covering the speakers any time I am typing. The Asus puts them underneath, and the laptop is slightly raised on feet at the back to both give clearance to the speakers and create a better typing angle. The sound is very impressive for such a small notebook, and the volume is very good.

SCREEN: I have no problem reading the screen, even with my tired old eyes. The native resolution of the screen in 1024 x 600. That second number means you'll be doing more vertical scrolling. Set the taskbar to auto hide and use full screen mode with your browser. I am really glad I went with this computer as opposed to the Acer One, which has a 8.9" screen. I wouldn't want to go any smaller than the ten inch screen on the Asus.

KEYBOARD: I'm a big guy with big hands, and I have no problem touch typing on this keyboard. I'd say my typos have probably increased 2% as a result of the smaller size.

BOTTOM LINE: I wanted a notebook I could throw in my briefcase and keep with me at all times, and would also allow me to get real work done when I used it, without major compromises. This small notebook completely fills the bill.
